How to join Granny Squares: 4 methods
How to join Granny Squares: 4 methods.
You’ve just completed your last Granny Square. Now, the fun part: join them all!
Nothing easier if you’ll be using one of the 4 methods described below. Keep reading!
Note: we used a contrasting color for the sake of the tutorial. If you used the same color on the last round of each square and prefere a less visible seam, use the same yarn color to join them.
For this tutorial we used:
- Sewing needle
- 7 mm Beechwood Crochet Hook
- Biologica wool yarn
The shade in the seam is Coral. Here are the combinations of each Granny:
- #1 Granny: Violet – Pasta – Firenze
- #2 Granny: Barcellona – Ecru – Sky Blue
- #3 Granny: White- Minipony – Aquamarine
- #4 Granny: Serenity – Marsh Mallow – Blue
#1 Method: Needle Seam
Thread your needle with the color you like and join the 2 squares on the matching corners.
- Insert the needle only in the outer loops of each stitch on both edges, then pull on the needle to make the first stitch.
- Repeat step 1. on the following stitch.
Continue repeating these steps on every stitch on the edges of both squares until you’ve sewn them together.
#2 Method: Slip Stitch
For this method, you will need a crochet hook. You can use the same hook you used to make the squares or even one size smaller.
- Join the 2 squares on the matching corners with a slip stitch.
- Insert the hook only through the outer loop of each stitch, on both sides.
- Yarn over.
- Pull the yarn through the 2 loops and through the stitch on the hook.
Repeat these steps until you reach the other side of the squares.
Note: be careful to always match the stitches on the edges of both squares, or the squares will end up looking misaligned!
#3 Method: Zig-Zag Stitch
For this method, you will need a crochet hook. Join the 2 squares on the matching corners with a slip stitch.
- Insert the hook through the first stitch on the edge of the left side granny (catching both loops).
- Yarn over.
- Pull the yarn through the stitch you entered and through the stitch on the hook.
- Now insert the hook through both loops of the first stitch of the right side granny.
- Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the stitch you entered and then through the stitch on the hook.
Continue repeating these steps until the seam is complete.
#4 Method: Cable Stitch
For this method, you will need a crochet hook. Join the 2 squares on the matching corners with a slip stitch.
- Insert the hook only through the outer loop of the first stitch of the left side granny.
- Yarn over.
- Pull the yarn through the loop you entered and the stitch that is on the hook.
- Now take the hook out of the stitch you’ve created, careful not to drop it.
- On the right side granny, insert the hook only through the outer loop of the first stitch, then catch the stitch you took the hook out of.
- Do not yarn over and just pull the stitch through the loop you entered.
Repeat these steps along the edges of the squares until the seam is done.
