Striped Garter Stitch

Not your average Garter Stitch. The Striped Garter Stitch will elevate your knitting game with zero effort and endless possibilities of color and yarn combinations.

If you are just starting off your knitting journey (or haven’t held your knitting needles in a while), find the basics of stitches and knitting techniques on this blog post and on our YouTube channel!

The Striped Garter Stitch is a two-color variation of the classic Garter Stitch, which is the easiest knitting stitch ever. With little to no effort and by choosing the perfect color combination, the final result will give your hand made garments an original touch. The knitting stitches you only need are knit and purl stitches.

Our swatch is knitted with our Pima Cotton yarn, 100% Pima Cotton from Peru, in the colors Jungle and Citron Yellow, using 4mm/US 6 Beechwood Knitting Needles.

How to knit the Striped Garter Stitch

Cast on a multiple of 6 + 3 stitches. You will work with two colors: Color A and Color B.

Rows 1 and 2:
  • With Color A: *knit 3 stitches, purl 3 stitches*.
  • Repeat from * to *. Knit the last 3 stitches.
Rows 3 and 4:
  • With Color B: *knit 3 stitches, purl 3 stitches*.
  • Repeat from * to *. Knit the last 3 stitches.

Repeat Rows 1 – 4 until your piece is the length your project requires.

As you can see, it’s not the usual striped design: this stitch creates two vertical sections of stripes that are different in thickness and give an optical effect. It’s super easy to make and totally customizable to your favorite colors and yarns.

Striped Garter Stitch Chart

The Striped Garter Stitch knitting chart is very easy to read even for beginners who never tried to read a graphic chart of any knitting stitch. You will only need to be able to recognize the knit and purl stitch symbols, careful to switch colors when indicated on the chart.
