The lace knitting stitch saga continues with the Irish Mesh Stitch tutorial! This stitch is one of the countless, super easy variations of the basic Lace Stitch.

The holes are created by alternating yarn-over stitches and 2 knit stitches that are “tied together” by a third stitch passed over both of them. The passed-over stitches create a zig-zag effect which makes this stitch unique and different from the regular Lace Stitch.

You can use this stitch for so many different projects and it’s so simple that once you’ve learned it you’ll never forget it!

How to knit the Irish Mesh Stitch

Cast on a multiple of 3 + 1 stitches.

Row 1:
  • Knit 1 stitch, *yarn over, pass 1 stitch over 2 stitches (= slip 1 stitch knit-wise, holding the yarn on the wrong side, knit 2 stitches, pass the slipped stitch over the 2 knit stitches)*.
  • Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
Rows 2 e 4:
  • Purl rows.
Row 3:
  • *Pass 1 stitch over 2 stitches, yarn over*.
  • Repeat from * to * until the end of the row. End with 1 knit stitch.

Repeat Rows 1 – 4 until your piece is the length your project requires.
