How to knit the Basketweave Ribbing Stitch

The Basketweave Ribbing Stitch is a simple yet interesting variation of the Basketweave Stitch. You will be able to knit it if you are already familiar with knit and purl stitches: this makes it perfect for beginners!

How to knit the Basketweave Ribbing Stitch

Cast on a multiple of 14 stitches + 7.

  • Row #1 (RS = right side): *Knit 7 stitches, work the following 7 stitches alternating 1 purl stitch and 1 knit stitch*. Repeat from * to * and knit the last 7 stitches.
  • Row #2 (WS = wrong side): Purl 7 stitches, * work the following 7 stitches alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch, purl 7 stitches*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
  • Row #3: *Purl 8 stitches, work the following 6 stitches alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch*. Repeat from * to * and purl the last 7 stitches.
  • Row #4: Repeat Row #2.
  • Row #5: Repeat Row #1.
  • Row #6: Knit 7 stitches, *work the following 6 stitches alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch, knit 8 stitches*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
  • Row #7: Repeat Row #1.
  • Row #8: Repeat Row #2.
  • Row #9: Repeat Row #3.
  • Row #10: Repeat Row #2.
  • Row #11: Repeat Row #1.

Half-way through!

  • Row #12: Work the first 7 stitches alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch, *purl 7 stitches, work the following 7 stitches alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
  • Row #13: *Work the following 7 stitches alternating 1 purl stitch and 1 knit stitch, knit 7 stitches*. Repeat from * and * and work the last 7 stitches alternating 1 purl stitch and 1 knit stitch.
  • Row #14: Work the first 7 stitches alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch, *knit 8 stitches, work the following 6 stitches alternating 1 knit stitch and 1 purl stitch*. Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
  • Row #15: Repeat Row #13.
  • Row #16: Repeat Row #12.
  • Row #17: * Work the following 6 stitches alternating 1 purl stitch and 1 knit stitch, purl 8 stitches*. Repeat from * and * and work the last 7 stitches alternating 1 purl stitch and 1 knit stitch.
  • Row #18: Repeat Row #12.
  • Row #19: Repeat Row #13.
  • Row #20: Repeat Row #14.
  • Row #21: Repeat Row #13.
  • Row #22: Repeat Row #12.
