How to join Granny Squares: 4 methods

You’ve just completed your last Granny Square. Now, the fun part: join them all!

Nothing easier if you’ll be using one of the 4 methods described below. Keep reading!

Note: we used a contrasting color for the sake of the tutorial. If you used the same color on the last round of each square and prefere a less visible seam, use the same yarn color to join them.

 

For this tutorial we used:

The shade in the seam is Coral. Here are the combinations of each Granny:

  • #1 Granny: Violet – Pasta – Firenze
  • #2 Granny: Barcellona – Ecru – Sky Blue
  • #3 Granny: White- Minipony – Aquamarine
  • #4 Granny: Serenity – Marsh Mallow – Blue

#1 Method: Needle Seam

Thread your needle with the color you like and join the 2 squares on the matching corners.

  1. Insert the needle only in the outer loops of each stitch on both edges, then pull on the needle to make the first stitch. Metodo #1: Cucitura con ago
  2. Repeat step 1. on the following stitch. Metodo #1: Cucitura con ago

Continue repeating these steps on every stitch on the edges of both squares until you’ve sewn them together.

#2 Method: Slip Stitch

For this method, you will need a crochet hook. You can use the same hook you used to make the squares or even one size smaller.

  1.  Join the 2 squares on the matching corners with a slip stitch.

  2. Insert the hook only through the outer loop of each stitch, on both sides. Metodo #2: Maglia Bassissima
  3. Yarn over.Metodo #2: Maglia Bassissima
  4. Pull the yarn through the 2 loops and through the stitch on the hook.Metodo #2: Maglia Bassissima

Repeat these steps until you reach the other side of the squares.

Note: be careful to always match the stitches on the edges of both squares, or the squares will end up looking misaligned!

#3 Method: Zig-Zag Stitch

For this method, you will need a crochet hook. Join the 2 squares on the matching corners with a slip stitch.

  1. Insert the hook through the first stitch on the edge of the left side granny (catching both loops). Metodo #3: Punto Zig-Zag

  3. Pull the yarn through the stitch you entered and through the stitch on the hook.Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi
  4. Now insert the hook through both loops of the first stitch of the right side granny. Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi
  5. Yarn over again and pull the yarn through the stitch you entered and then through the stitch on the hook.Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi

Continue repeating these steps until the seam is complete.

#4 Method: Cable Stitch

For this method, you will need a crochet hook. Join the 2 squares on the matching corners with a slip stitch.

  1. Insert the hook only through the outer loop of the first stitch of the left side granny.Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi

  3. Pull the yarn through the loop you entered and the stitch that is on the hook. Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi
  4. Now take the hook out of the stitch you’ve created, careful not to drop it. Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi
  5. On the right side granny, insert the hook only through the outer loop of the first stitch, then catch the stitch you took the hook out of.Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi
  6. Do not yarn over and just pull the stitch through the loop you entered. Come unire le Mattonelle Granny: 4 metodi

Repeat these steps along the edges of the squares until the seam is done.
