Crochet Stitch: Herringbone Stitch Tutorial

This stitch is a total crochet superstar as seen on countless crochet accessories, from summer bucket bags to winter beanies: the Herringbone Stitch is a fun crochet stitch to make and to try with different yarns and textures!

It gives a smooth and neat fabric that reminds of the classic herringbone design everyone knows. This is one of those stitches that are much easier than they look! Try it in combination with different crochet stitches and sections on the same project for interesting contrasts and light reflections.

The Herringbone Stitch is a crochet stitch that reminds of the herringbone fabrics as seen on coats and jackets. This is a great stitch to make high-resistance bags and accessories, especially if using a medium/thick yarn. To crochet this stitch you will need to know the Single Crochet Stitch and Herringbone Single Crochet Stitch. You only alternate 2 rows across your project.

To get the swatch you see in the picture above, we used:

  • 10 mm / US 15 Beechwood Crochet Hook
  • Bettaknit’s Cool Wool (100% pure virgin wool and amazing color selection, need we say more? 🤩) in the color Pink

To make this fancy stitch, you will need to know how to work in Single Crochet and Herringbone Single Crochet (which you will master here on this blogpost!). Herringbone single crochet on the Right Side (Hsc. RS):

Pass the hook under the left strand of the last sc./Hsc. you’ve made, then insert it into the next st./ch. moving the hook from front (RS) to back (WS), yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), yarn over again and pull it through all 3 loops on the hook.

Herringbone single crochet on the Wrong Side (Hsc. WS):

With the wrong side facing you, flip the work slightly upwards so that you can see the right side and pass the hook under the left strand of the last sc./Hsc. you’ve made, then insert it into the next st./ch. moving the hook from back (RS) to front (WS), yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on the hook), yarn over again and pull it through all 3 loops on the hook.

Note: Turning chains do not count as first stitch of the row. Do not skip the first stitch of the row.
