What’s Double Crochet?

Double Crochet stitch, together with Single Crochet, is very common in crochet work.

Double Crochet is a taller stitch than single crochet. It is formed by a “yarn over,” which is wrapping yarn from back to front before placing the hook in the stitch.

It creates a more open fabric that can be suitable for many items of clothing, such as hats, scarves, cardigans and sweaters, but also for homedecor items such as rugs and blankets.

With Double Crochet, it is possible to create the famous grandma’s tiles, better known as Granny Square (here is a short tutorial).

How to work Double Crochet step by step:

  1. Make a Slip Knot and then make a foundation chain (look here).
  2. Pay attention to the tension of the yarn. The yarn should be wrapped around the shaft of your hook (not the throat!), not too tightly.
  3. Yarn over hook, and insert the hook into the fourth chain from the hook (the first three stitches will be your turning chain).
  4. Remember to yarn over from back to front.
  5. Yarn over the hook and pull the wrapped hook through the center of the chain stitch, carrying the wrapped yarn through the stitch.
  6. Now, you should have 3 loops on your hook (the chain, the yarn over and the wrapped yarn).
  7. Yarn over the hook again and draw your yarn through the first 2 loops on your hook (this step begins your double corchet stitch).
  8. Yarn over the hook again and draw your yarn through the last 2 loops on your hook. You should have one loop remaining on your hook.
  9. You have now crocheted your first Double Crochet!
  10. To continue working in Double Crochet, insert the hook in to the next chain. Repeat steps from 5 to 8 until you have crocheted into the last stitch of your foundation chain.
  11. Turn work, so that the back side is facing you.
  12. To work across a row which has already been crocheted make a turning chain of 3 stitch.
  13. Repeat steps from 5 to 8 for each of the next double crochet stitches.

You will gain speed and accuracy with just a bit of exercise. You can practice making some samples, or throw yourselves headlong and start with simple projects, with a square or rectangular shape!
