Crochet Stitch Pattern: Cross Over Stitch Tutorial

The Cross Over Stitch: a new fancy lace crochet stitch to add to your stitch collection! With its diagonal lines, it creates spirals that somehow remind us of the classic cable pattern on wool sweaters. The lace design, however, makes it just perfect for spring and summer cotton garments too.

We tested this stitch with Raffia, a 100% cellulose yarn that is very popular to create any sort of crochet accessories. The result is definitely unique!

The Cross Over Stitch is a lace crochet stitch. With its diagonal lines, it creates spirals that remind of the classic cable pattern on wool sweaters. The lace design, however, makes it perfect for spring and summer cotton garments too. It is very versatile and can be made using many different kinds of yarn.

The yarn you see in the swatch is Raffia, 100% paper cellulose yarn, in the shade Lilac. We used a 5 mm (US H6) Beechwood Crochet Hook, but you can choose the right hook size adjusting to your yarn and tension.

How to crochet the Cross Over Stitch

Chain a multiple of 4 + 2 stitches.

Round 1 (WS = wrong side):
  • Ch. 1, skip 2 ch. from the hook, 1 sc. in every ch. st. below.
Round 2 (RS = right side):
  • Ch. 3, *skip 1 sc., 4 crossed sts. (= 1 dc. in each of the following 3 sc., 1 half dc. pointing the hook in the skipped st. and working in front of the 3 dc. sts.)*.

Repeat from * to * until the end of the round. End with 1 dc. in the first sc. of the previous round.

Round 3:
  • Ch. 1, 1 sc. in every st. below.
Round 4:

Repeat from Round 2.

Cross Over Stitch Chart

The Cross Over Stitch crochet chart is an intermediate-level chart. To make this fancy stitch, you will need to know how to work in Single Crochet, Double Crochet and Half Double Crochet. The cross-over design sets up on a multiple of 4 + 2 stitches, repeating 3 rounds until desired length.
