Crochet Stitch Pattern: Basketweave Stitch Tutorial

We’ve seen it in our previous knitting tutorials: now we’re going to recreate the crochet version of the Basketweave Stitch!

This version is really one of the best stitches if you want to make durable and textured bags and pouches, especially when working with medium to thick yarns.

How to crochet the Basketweave Stitch

Chain a multiple of 6 + 5 stitches.

Round 1:
  • Ch. 3, skip 4 ch. from the hook, 1 dc. in every ch. st. below.
Rounds 2 and 5:
  • Ch. 3, *1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 front post dc. around each of the following 3 sts.*.
  • Repeat from * to * until the end of the round. End with 1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 dc. in the last st.
Rounds 3 and 4:
  • Ch. 3, *1 front post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts.*.
  • Repeat from * to * until the end of the round. End with 1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 dc. in the last st.

Continue working repeating from Row 2 to Row 5.

 

To make a Front or Back Post Double Crochet, instead of inserting the hook through the 2 loops of the stitch below, you will need to insert it through the gaps between the posts of the stitches below.

For the Front Post Double Crochet:

  • Yarn over as if to start working in Double Crochet.
  • Insert the hook from front to back through the gap that is on the right side of the post below.
  • Moving from back to front, come out through the gap that is on the left side of the post below.
  • Yarn over again and make a Double Crochet stitch as you normally would.

For the Back Post Double Crochet:

  • Yarn over as if to start working in Double Crochet.
  • Insert the hook from back to front through the gap that is on the right side of the post below.
  • Moving from front to back, come out through the gap that is on the left side of the post below.
  • Yarn over again and make a Double Crochet stitch as you normally would.

Basketweave Stitch Chart

The Basketweave Stitch crochet chart is an intermediate-level crochet chart. This stitch is made on a multiple of 6 + 5 stitches and it only repeats 4 rounds. The woven-like design is obtained by alternating front and back post double crochet stitches.
