To make this fancy stitch, you will need to know how to work in Double Crochet (UK Treble Crochet) and Front/Back Post Double Crochet (UK Front/Back Post Treble Crochet). Let’s begin!

How to crochet the Basketweave Stitch

Chain a multiple of 6 + 5 stitches.

Round 1:
  • Ch. 3, skip 4 ch. from the hook, 1 dc. in every ch. st. below.
Rounds 2 and 5:
  • Ch. 3, *1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 front post dc. around each of the following 3 sts.*.
  • Repeat from * to * until the end of the round. End with 1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 dc. in the last st.
Rounds 3 and 4:
  • Ch. 3, *1 front post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts.*.
  • Repeat from * to * until the end of the round. End with 1 back post dc. around each of the following 3 sts., 1 dc. in the last st.

Continue working repeating from Row 2 to Row 5.

To make a Front or Back Post Double Crochet, instead of inserting the hook through the 2 loops of the stitch below, you will need to insert it through the gaps between the posts of the stitches below.

For the Front Post Double Crochet:

  • Yarn over as if to start working in Double Crochet.
  • Insert the hook from front to back through the gap that is on the right side of the post below.
  • Moving from back to front, come out through the gap that is on the left side of the post below.
  • Yarn over again and make a Double Crochet stitch as you normally would.

For the Back Post Double Crochet:

  • Yarn over as if to start working in Double Crochet.
  • Insert the hook from back to front through the gap that is on the right side of the post below.
  • Moving from front to back, come out through the gap that is on the left side of the post below.
  • Yarn over again and make a Double Crochet stitch as you normally would.
